When it comes to wading boots, I’ve really only ever used one pair until I came across a pair of Korkers SnowJack wading boots at a nearby Cabela’s. My wife was going to buy me a pair of Korkers Redsides for Christmas, but the store was entirely out of Korkers and was trying to convince me to settle for a pair of Cabela’s wading boots. Now I’m not the type that drops a ton of money on any piece of gear, and wading boots are no exception, but I really wanted a pair of wading boots with interchangeable soles. The primary reason for this being that Maryland requires rubber sole waders and I am really hoping to get over to some trout streams in western Maryland this year since it’s closer than where I usually fish in the mountains.
Long story short I thought I was going to have to admit defeat and look online when I got home until I took a walk through the Bargain Cave. I glanced at the boots on the wall and a pair Korkers wading boots piqued my interest. Further investigation revealed they were too small for my feet. Man, that was the second time I got my hopes up today and struck out. Then I looked down the row and saw several pairs of the same wading boots. Size 8, 14, 8.5, 9, 10- all not what I was looking for. I finally honed in on two pairs that were likely candidates and tried them on with some heavy wool socks I was wearing, as well as some neoprene wading booties I brought with me (I might seem like an overly prepared customer, but an extra layer-especially neoprene- might make or break the perfect fit). I picked out the size that best fit my sock/bootie simulation and couldn’t have been happier. The best part is I bought a more expensive pair of boots for the same price as the boots I set out to buy! Thus, I purchased a pair of Korkers SnowJack wading boots and have been enjoying them ever since. Below are my thoughts on the product:
What I like about the Korkers SnowJack: My first impression of these wading boots overall was that they were comfortable. I unfortunately have a hard time finding comfortable shoes, especially without wearing them around for a bit, and these shoes exceeded my expectations. I tried them on in the store and then didn’t put them on again until I was out fishing for several hours and had no problems with hot spots or stiffness. That’s saying a lot for the design and care Korkers puts into their products.
One of the distinguishing features of the Snowjack wading boot is the fact that they are insulated with 400 grams of Thinsulate. This, along with the tall, waterproof design, make these a great choice for cold weather and even into the warmer months. I know I’ve experienced cold feet on longer days of fishing even into April and May so I am looking forward to wearing these well into the spring season.
Another great feature of the Korkers SnowJacks are the interchangeable soles. The boots came with an all-rubber sole and a rubber sole with metal studs. On a recent brookie trip to a steep mountain stream, the carbide studded rubber soles gripped every surface I tested them on, even on large sloping boulders and rocks covered with moss. These insulated boots in conjunction with the carbide studded soles make the perfect winter setup because they will grip rocks and ice, and will keep your feet toasty warm as well!
What I didn’t like about the Korkers SnowJack: All in all these boots are solid and are going to be my new go-to boots until it gets too warm to wear them in the summer. The only issue I experience with the boots is that with the taller-than-usual design, I cannot stretch the hook at the front of the gravel guard to the toe of the boot. This might improve after I’ve worn them more and tightened up the lacing or I’ll just start hooking them higher up on the laces. Another potential downside of these boots is that they are heavier than the typical wading boot due to the taller ankle supports and the insulation they provide, but if you’re favorite spots aren’t miles from the parking lot these boots are going to perform well and take one less thing off your list of potential ways to skunk a day of fishing!
The Korkers SnowJack are my first product from Korkers and I have to say that I am sold. Several recommendations from friends and now first-hand experience have won Korkers a regular customer and I’m sure you’ll be just as impressed! Buy them now at Amazon: Korkers footwear Men’s SnowJack Snow Boot
